Fred Perry Sculpture Presentation
Brief – To relocate and present the statue of Fred Perry
Solution – The statue of Fred Perry, erected in 1984 to mark the 50th anniversary of his first singles Championship, had to be relocated following the extensive upgrades to Centre Court. The new location places the statue in one of the most prominent locations on the site – on the corner of Centre Court by the main entrance to the grounds. This is also one of busiest areas during the Championships so the footprint of the base had to be kept to a minimum.
The small statue could easily be lost against the grand scale of centre court, so a large graphic was installed to act as a backdrop. An innovative technique was developed with graphic production company Ltd Ltd which uses layered prints, creating the impression that the image is carved into the glass. Extensive testing was carried out to ensure the image did not overpower the statue. At night the image is backlit to silhouette the dynamic pose of the statue.
Mather & Co installed the statue ready for an event to mark the 100th anniversary of Fred Perry’s birth in May 2010.
