Integrating new design with the day-to-day workings of a Cathedral
Mather & Co was appointed to integrate a new visitor experience within Liverpool Cathedral including an exhibition, retail and café offer.
It was essential to maintain a balance between enhancing the visitor experience and respecting the awe-inspiring architecture of the Cathedral. Locations for the interpretive ‘stations’ were carefully chosen with the client so as not to intrude into the space, particularly during a service. A discreet new facilities block also houses a small AV theatre showing the story of the cathedral and taking visitors on a computer generated fly-through of the space.
We also designed and installed a retail shop as a start and end point for the Cathedral Experience Tour. Using glass and neutral colours allowed the cathedral building to remain prominent and visible in the shop space. Above, on a mezzanine level we installed a café overlooking the main nave.
