An interactive and hands-on football experience for all the family
In 2010, it was decided that the National Football Museum would move from its historic home in Preston to the centre of Manchester. Mather & Co was appointed to mastermind this move, leading the design and interpretation of two permanent galleries, a temporary exhibition space, external signage, reception, Hall of Fame, café, retail and AV theatre.
The new museum offers a fun and varied experience for all ages, bringing to life the passion and skill of the game. Bespoke ‘Football+’ cards allow visitors to try out their own footballing skills at penalty kicking, passing and other tricks. A Pepper’s Ghost of Gary Lineker offers visitors a behind-the-scenes tour of the collections and large object displays are interpreted using integrated screens and tactile interfaces. Only two years after opening, the museum received its millionth visitor and contributes annually to Manchester’s economy.
Manchester City Council
— Kevin Moore, Director, National Football MuseumWe are delighted with the work of Mather & Co on this project… As well as a very creative approach to the displays, Mather are strong on visitor facilities, orientation and commercial aspects. They have proved to be an excellent choice in all respects.
