Proudly telling the complete history of rugby in South Africa for the first time
In South Africa, rugby is much more than just a game. So when Mather & Co was selected to design the new Springbok Experience we knew that the design needed to carry this passion for the game but set it against the context of the long and complicated history of the country. For the first time the museum would also include black history from the 1860s to present day.
Mather & Co developed a new two-level experience on the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town with an interactive rugby skills area on the ground floor and a historical walk through South African rugby heritage on the upper floor with engaging objects, films and displays. The interpretation is designed to be challenging and trigger emotion in visitors as they explore the key sporting and political themes on the way. Since opening visitor numbers have soared and it is now a firm TripAdvisor favourite.
Design and Build
— Andy Colquhoun, Project Director, The Springbok ExperienceMather & Co got hold of our project and within a month had turned it around and got it firmly on track to produce an outstanding museum experience that continues to ‘wow’ visitors. They grasped a complex history, converted it into a compelling, beautifully illustrated narrative and all to an extremely tight deadline.
