Celebrating the culture and heritage of North Herts
Mather & Co worked with North Hertfordshire Council to develop their new museum promoting the culture, heritage and environment of the area. The HLF-funded project involved combining the collections of the current Hitchin and Letchworth Museums into one accessible museum in Hitchin Town Hall.
The new displays enable the Council to define and present the heritage from the entire North Hertfordshire district in a better and more engaging way for its communities and visitors. Nine key themes carry visitors through their exploration of the collections. The Ground Floor gallery is designed to introduce the key aspects of North Hertfordshire’s history using collections, interactivity and augmented reality techniques.
On the First Floor, a number of ‘icon objects’ are used within a central display to guide the eye cleverly across the space. Another shared space used for both museum visitors and community events and workshops looks at some of the key movers and shakers, and a shadow theatre brings to life some of the legends and folklore from the area.
