Lloyd George Museum.

Political legacy on the national and international stage.

The Lloyd George Museum in Llanystumdwy tells the story of one of Britain’s most influential Prime Ministers, exploring his early life in North Wales and his political legacy on the national and international stage.

Following significant redevelopment, the museum has been reimagined to create a clearer, more engaging visitor journey - strengthening its connection to place while refreshing how Lloyd George’s story is told for contemporary audiences.

The Brief

The project required a sensitive reinterpretation of an established museum dedicated to a major political figure. The aim was not simply to update displays, but to modernise the narrative, improve accessibility and broaden audience appeal - while respecting the historic site and its Welsh identity.

Interpretation needed to balance biography with political history, presenting Lloyd George as both a local boy from Llanystumdwy and a statesman whose decisions shaped Britain during a period of enormous change.

The Design Response

Mather & Co developed a renewed exhibition scheme that introduces greater clarity and structure to the storytelling. The redesigned galleries guide visitors chronologically through Lloyd George’s life, combining personal insight with national context.

New graphics, interpretation panels and interactive elements have been introduced to:

  • Strengthen the visual identity of the museum
  • Improve readability and accessibility
  • Encourage deeper engagement with key political moments
  • Create clearer thematic zones within the space

The design enhances the visitor flow while retaining the intimacy and authenticity of the original museum setting.

Interpretation and Experience

The refreshed displays bring forward lesser-known aspects of Lloyd George’s life, including his upbringing in rural Wales and the formative experiences that shaped his political philosophy.

Careful attention was given to tone and balance, ensuring complex political themes are presented in an accessible and impartial way. Archival material, photography and interpretive graphics work together to create a layered narrative experience.

The project also strengthens the museum’s sense of place, reinforcing its connection to Llanystumdwy and to Welsh heritage more broadly.

Outcome

The redevelopment has provided the Lloyd George Museum with a renewed platform for education and engagement. The updated interpretation supports school visits, heritage tourism and local community use, while presenting a clearer and more contemporary experience for visitors.

By combining thoughtful storytelling with considered design, the project ensures that Lloyd George’s legacy continues to resonate with new generations.
