Reigniting the Olympic Flame at this world-class museum
Mather & Co has returned to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne to redevelop the design of the Olympic Spirit Gallery. Our work involved re-designing the visitor flow of the gallery and incorporating new themes that have become important priorities for IOC President Thomas Bach.
Our design allows visitors to explore what the Olympic Spirit is about inside and outside of the Games and how it transcends all culture, peoples and place. Visitors start in the Olympic Village where they can listen to the experiences of the athletes in the Village and what being an Olympian means to them in a new audio-visual experience.
The second half explores the Olympic Spirit outside of the Games. Visitors can firstly explore how the IOC supports athletes from all backgrounds to compete at the Games through a series of digital totems. Two immersive films take visitors through an emotional journey of how the IOC empowers and helps communities in need. Two further zones explore how the organisation promotes education, responsibility and activity through initiatives around the world.
The gallery ends on the significant Olympic Laurel award which is awarded at each Olympic Games to a person or organisation that has championed the Olympic Spirit through sport and the Olympic medals themselves, awarded to the Olympians that have achieved the greatest feat of all – to become the best in the world.
