The Brief: To design a new museum in the basement of a new turnstile building at Wimbledon.

Our Solution: The award winning Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum combines an unparalleled collection of tennis artefacts and spectacular audio/visual presentations. Wimbledon arguably has more history and prestige than any other sporting venue in the country and the design needed to respect the rich heritage as well as incorporate the latest interpretive techniques.

A 200 degree immersive cinema explores the science of tennis. The film features 3D computer graphics with live action footage taken with a panoramic camera positioned on Centre Court during Maria Sharapova’s first round match. Visitors are shown all behind the scenes elements that make a match on Centre Court, from the physiology and equipment of the player to the cameras and IT systems that beam the live images around the world.

A 3D ‘hologram’ of John McEnroe shares his memories and insights in a recreation of the men’s dressing room in Centre Court, in a show which combines the Victorian ‘Pepper’s Ghost’ technique with cutting edge projection and screen technology.

The space also includes a temporary exhibition gallery with a sliding panel system which also allows corporate functions to take place in the museum, and the Kenneth Richie Wimbledon Library which houses a unique collection of tennis literature.
