Bringing out the history and heritage of this sacred site
Mather & Co has completed a new welcome centre and interpretative scheme at St Albans Cathedral which opened to the public on St Albans Day, 22 June 2019. This National Lottery Heritage Fund project over five years looked to raise the profile of St Albans Cathedral, nationally and internationally, to communicate the story of Britain’s First Saint and the role St Albans Cathedral has played in the nation’s history in a more compelling way and to engage new audiences.
Mather & Co has completed interpretative design throughout the Cathedral that is sympathetic and fitting with the overall fabric of the building and new build Welcome Centre. It includes the new design for the Welcome Centre and What’s On information system, a new interpretative area in the South Transept, and a new Treasury Exhibition chronicling the history of the Cathedral on a striking oak timber structure in the space with digital touchscreens, physical interactives and display cases featuring liturgical costumes and other religious artefacts.
We have also designed a new interpretative trail with stopping points around the Cathedral where visitors can discover information about the building. This continues into the wider site with external wayfinding, orientation and interpretation.
