The Royal Mint Experience opened its gates to the public for the first time in over 1000 years in May 2016. Mather & Co developed all of the interpretative content alongside The Royal Mint Museum and Client team, and designed the permanent visitor centre, the factory experience, entrance and retail space.
This historic institution had traditionally been a closed shop but the new offer provides visitors with a unique opportunity to see how their money is made. The objectives of the design were to make the visit as accessible to all and allow a new generation to get involved in what the The Royal Mint does. It is a participatory and interactive experience in six zones taking you from the moneyer’s shop in the time of Alfred the Great through to the state-of-the-art technology and craft of the modern factory in Llantrisant today. Visitors can get fully immersed in the exhibition along the way, enter a 360-degree AV film placing them on the production process, throw coins into wishing wells and piggy banks, learn about the military and sporting medals that are produced and hear the stirring stories behind them, and go on an exclusive factory tour where they can see money being made before their very eyes.
