Bringing the whole story of this historic site to life for the first time
On 25 August 2018, Quarry Bank opened to the public as a fully transformed and re‐interpreted estate. Mather & Co was involved in this HLF-funded project over three years, working with the National Trust to redesign it as a complete site with a new welcome building and six individual venue experiences. Visitors can for the first time be able to tailor their visit and fully access all areas of the site.
In the mill, the largest of all the venues, visitors can experience the sights and sounds of the mill, put themselves in the mill workers’ shoes and learn about the amazing story of power and engineering. They can explore our intricate warp and weft design to learn about the origins of the mill and become immersed in the daily lives of the workforce in an atmospheric AV show. On the lower two floors and in the working sheds they can explore the story of power through interactivity, engaging with volunteers and a beautiful lightbox story installation.
