Transforming the display of Sheffield’s finest metalwork collection
Sheffield is synonymous with the steel industry and has an outstanding metalwork collection that includes local, national and internationally made pieces covering over 2000 years of history. This project aimed to transform the display of Sheffield’s Designated Metalwork Collection, increasing access to the collections through flexible and sustainable displays and improving the visitor experience by creating a welcoming, vibrant, inspiring space for discovery and learning.
Mather & Co was responsible for redisplaying a selection of some 13,000 objects in a way that visitors could access the many stories in different and more engaging ways. We developed a clear narrative story for the gallery using specific themes, brought out the human stories of the makers and layered the information for the different audience groups using the space. Smaller physical interactivity and AV screens allow visitors to delve into the stories in more detail looking at makers marks, the different types of metal decoration and even place settings from across the eras.
